A container cabin is a shipping container built out as a usable room or building — site office, crib room, drying room, lunch room, smoko hut or accommodation. The steel box is the structure; the fit-out is what makes it a cabin. This is the biggest category in our catalogue for a reason: sites need buildings that arrive finished and can be moved when the project ends.

What to specify

The difference between a cheap cabin and a good one is almost never the container. It is the insulation value, whether the lining is sealed, how the power is run, and whether the ventilation actually works when the site is shut up over a weekend. Ask what R-value the insulation has, how the ceiling is finished, and where the switchboard sits.

Also confirm the internal height. A lined 8ft 6in container has a noticeably lower ceiling than a high cube, and on a site where people work eight-hour shifts that matters.

Hire instead?

If the need is for the life of a project rather than forever, hire is almost always cheaper and you do not carry the asset, the transport or the maintenance. Cabins hire well because they are wanted for a defined period and then not wanted at all. Buy when the cabin is permanent, when you need a specific fit-out, or when the hire term would exceed the purchase price.

Transport, craning and placement

A fitted-out cabin is heavier than a bare container. Most are set down with a crane or a side-loader rather than a tilt-tray, which affects both the cost and the access you need. Level ground is non-negotiable — a cabin that racks will crack lining, bind doors and leak at the joins.
