Two Horse Trailers

The two horse float is the most common float on Australian roads, and for most people it is the right one: two horses, one tow vehicle, and a float that fits a standard driveway. The decision that matters is not brand, it is angle load or straight load — they suit different horses and different towing habits.

Angle load versus straight load

Angle load floats the horses at roughly 45 degrees, head to the front corner. The horse stands with its body angled, which most horses accept more calmly than facing straight down the road, and it gives more room for the horse to balance through corners. Angle load floats are usually wider and shorter than an equivalent straight load.

Straight load faces the horses forward, side by side. It is the traditional layout, tracks better behind a smaller tow vehicle, and is easier to load a horse that is used to it. Bays are narrower, and a big horse can feel cramped.

Neither is better. A horse that has only travelled straight load will resist an angle load the first time, and vice versa. Match the float to the horse and to what you are used to towing.

What to check on a used float

• Floor — the single most important item. Sound the floor across the whole span. Soft spots, rot and delamination are common and dangerous.
• Frame and drawbar — look for cracks at the welds and rust inside the rails.
• Ramps and tailgate — springs that hold, latches that catch.
• Brakes and bearings — serviceable items, and where the money goes on a used float.
• Registration and whether it is roadworthy in your state.
• Height and bay width against your horse, especially if you are carrying anything over 16hh.

Towing

Check your tow vehicle's rated capacity against the float's ATM loaded — two horses plus tack plus water adds up. An overloaded tow vehicle is dangerous and often illegal. Confirm whether the float has electric brakes and whether your vehicle has a controller fitted.
