Try a size (20ft, 40ft), a type (high cube, reefer, float) or clear the filters.
A high cube container is a foot taller than standard: 9ft 6in externally instead of 8ft 6in. That extra foot adds about 4.5m³ to a 20ft and about 9m³ to a 40ft, but the number that matters is the one you feel — ceiling height. If a person is going to spend time inside the container, high cube is the difference between a storage box and a room.
When high cube is worth the extra
- Workshops and site offices where headroom has to clear a bench and a person.
- Conversion projects — lining, insulation and a ceiling all eat height.
- Tall cargo such as machinery, racking or stacked pallets that will not fit under 8ft 6in.
- Cabins and home offices — see cabins.
When standard height is the better buy
If the container is purely for storage and nobody is going inside, a standard unit holds the same floor area for less money. High cube is worth paying for when the vertical space does work. For pure storage volume, a 40ft standard usually beats a 20ft high cube on cost per cubic metre.
Loading and transport
High cube units are the same footprint as their standard equivalents, so access requirements do not change — but the extra height means the truck and the site need a little more overhead clearance. Check for powerlines, carport beams and low branches on the approach. A high cube also sits slightly taller on the truck, which matters where there is a bridge or a canopy on the route.
Inspection standard
Doors swung and latched, seals checked, floor sounded for soft spots, frame photographed as found. On high cube units we check the roof line specifically — the extra height makes roof dents from loading more common, and a dented roof traps water.
